Day 3

Munich to Salzburg, Austria

Start the morning with breakfast in Munich, well known for its German cuisine, beer specialties, and the original Oktoberfest; it also has a vibrant art scene and beautifully preserved architecture. From there, travel to Salzburg for a city tour of this stunning ancient capital. First settled during the Neolithic Age, it has been home to Celts, Romans, and the singing von Trapp family in the many centuries since. See the Salzach River, the Baroque and Gothic architecture of Salzburg’s Altstadt area, and the Alpine views that make Salzburg a popular tourist destinations. In addition, Salzburg was home to one of the most beloved musicians in history—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart’s presence is still felt here—walk the same cobblestone streets as the young genius, visit museums devoted to his work and early years, or simply enjoy a performance at one of the many restaurants that offer live music in a variety of genres. Day 4

Embarkation in Salzburg (Departs at 5:00 PM)

Fans of the von Trapp family, or just of Julie Andrews’ awe-inspiringly beautiful singing voice, are sure to enjoy today’s Sound of Music tour, where guests will learn the real history behind the beloved musical. Get settled on the A-ROSA's Donna this evening and set off down the Danube.

Day 5

Vienna, Austria (1:00 PM – 7:00 PM)

Today is yours to enjoy Vienna, one of history’s greatest cities, whose impact on the world’s music and culture cannot be overstated. Ample evidence remains of the role it played as the grand setting for classical performances by Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Johannes Brahms. It is home to opulent palaces like the Hofburg, and the stunning Vienna State Opera House. In addition, Vienna is full of museums: you can find institutions devoted to music, art, history, dance, the Habsburgs, and of course Sigmund Freud, the Vienna-based neurologist whose controversial theories on psychology became infamous. Vienna is also home to the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace, once the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers.

Day 6

Budapest, Hungary (12:30 PM – 6:30 PM)

Today, enjoy Budapest, Hungary’s history-rich capital city, at your leisure. Budapest was once two distinct cities on opposite sides of the Danube—Buda, on one bank, was characterized by rolling hills and valleys; and Pest, on the other, with its flatter landscape, offered a panoramic view over the banks of the Danube. Everywhere you look, experience fascinating history, spectacular architecture, and fantastic natural beauty—not to mention delicious regional cuisine. The Danube provides Budapest with an abundance of fresh carp, the star of the unmissable, flavorful, strikingly red (thanks to locally grown and vibrantly crimson paprika) Fisherman’s Soup. Sit down to a steaming bowl, or another Hungarian specialty like goulash or delicious fried Lángos, topped with savory ingredients like mashed potatoes and sausages.

Day 7

Bratislava, Slovakia (12:30 AM – 6:00 PM)

Today you get to experience Slovakia’s beautiful riverside city of Bratislava. Explore the ancient palaces and stunningly colorful Old Town of this forest-ringed capital. Bordered by the Small Carpathia mountains and beautiful lowland vineyards, Bratislava is one of Europe’s most appealing destinations, despite its under-theradar reputation.

Day 8

Krems, Austria (8:00 AM – 8:30 AM) & Melk, Austria (12:30 PM – 1:00 PM)

Tiny Krems is packed with history dating back to the 10th century, when it was first mentioned as an imperial fortress. In addition, it has long been a longtime producer of fine wines, and is home to many extremely well-regarded wineries. Next, come to the lovely town of Melk. Famous for its towering baroque Melk Abbey, an 11thcentury Benedictine abbey perched on a rocky outcrop above the Danube with a spectacular view, Melk’s Old Town is full of a variety of historic buildings, nearly all of which boast stunning river views.

Day 9

Disembark in Engelhartszell (Disembark at 7:00 AM) & Travel to Munich

After disembarking in Engelhartszell an der Donau in Austria, return to Munich, which you will explore on an illuminating city tour. See the beautiful Baroque Nymphenburg Palace, Marienplatz, the heart of Munich’s Old Town, Munich Residenz, Germany’s largest city palace, Hofgarten, the court garden completed in 1617, and Frauenkirche, a local landmark church famous for its lofty towers. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travelers at the original Hofbräuhaus, Munich's second largest tourist attraction. The historical tavern features authentic food and dirndl-clad waitresses.
